The Widest and Thick Plate Stainless Steel in China Successfully Rolled in Baosteel

Recently, baoshan iron & steel Co., Ltd. gave full play to the synergy effect of the group, purchased wide slab from TISCO, and successfully rolled the widest stainless steel plate with a specification of 12.9*3796*12010mm for the first time in batch, thus ending the "bottleneck" of long-term dependence on import of domestic LNG main pipeline plates, laying a solid foundation for downstream industries to solve the problem of "sticking neck" of key materials and helping the country to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
As a clean energy, LNG plays an important role in the adjustment of China's energy structure, and China will continue to promote the promotion and application of LNG. It is estimated that on the basis of 10000 tons of wide-format plates for LNG main pipelines, the demand will increase by 15% every year in the future. With the large input of overseas LNG resources, the demand for 304/304L austenitic stainless steel as the main material for transmission pipelines will also increase greatly.
There are two key technical requirements for 304/304L austenitic stainless steel for LNG pipeline transportation: one is the toughness of the material resistant to room temperature-ultra-low temperature change; The second is that with the requirement of improving the transportation efficiency, the diameter of the steel pipe is getting larger and larger, thus requiring the width of the stainless steel plate to be wider and wider, with the maximum width exceeding 4000mm. In view of the demand of the material's resistance to normal temperature-ultra-low temperature working state, the Central Research Institute optimized the composition and process of the regular 304/304L, so that the LNG steel can still maintain a good performance state in the extreme environment. According to the width requirement of the material, the production, marketing and research team actively cooperated and purchased 1800mm width slab from TISCO. The thick plate technology team adopted special online solid solution rolling technology for the production of ultra-wide plate, so that the corrosion and mechanical properties after rolling met the customer's requirements. Users are very appreciative of Baosteel's ability to provide it with alternative LNG materials with a width of 3796mm imported from Japan, and have welded steel plates into pipes on its production line.
This time the widest plate stainless steel rolling, because the specification and process exceeded the original production limit requirements, the production, marketing and research team decided to make an innovative breakthrough. The stainless steel team actively communicated and discussed with the users in advance to confirm the order and technical conditions, and invited the users to the production site of Baosteel to carry out technical exchanges. The production and manufacturing team identified the user's needs and formulated a detailed production plan, including slab selection, material design, cutting and sizing, heating, rolling and cooling processes, and subsequent sampling and performance tests. The whole trial production process is hit, the shape is good, the external dimensions meet the contract requirements, after testing, the performance meets the requirements, the trial production is a complete success.
